Epson Stylus DX3850 Review


The Epson Stylus DX3850 is one of several Epson all-in-one printers from the DX3800 series. As well as being a full colour inkjet printer, the Epson DX3850 is also a colour photocopier and a scanner. Ink is stored in four separate Epson inkjet cartridges, one each for black, cyan, magenta, and yellow. This method of using separate ink reservoirs for separate colours means a lower ink economy, even though you will be unable to print when any run out of ink. Another advantage is that it enables for a greater quality of print, especially colour photograph printing.

Colour Printing Quality


Colour printing is all about quality. With Epson inkjet printers there are several ways in which the quality of colour photographs are enhanced when compared to some other printer makes. Micro Piezo technology enables the printer a much greater level of control over the size of the dot that is printed. The result is a stunningly clear photographic image, and clear and professional looking text and documentation. DuraBrite Ink is also partially responsible for the excellent standard of quality. It provides lush and vibrant colours that you might otherwise struggle to attain if you use other inks.


Replacing Epson Inkjet Cartridges


Replacement of ink is done as and when required for each colour. The colour Epson inkjet cartridges work independently of one another for the most part. While the printer will not print once any of the colours have depleted, you will only need to replace the one colour cartridge. In contrast, a single cartridge containing all of the colours would need completely replacing as soon as one of those colours was gone.

Printing On Different Media


The Epson Stylus DX3850 is also designed to print on a range of different media. As well as standard paper, it can print on card, envelopes, and transparent slides. You can expect a printing speed just short of 20 pages per minute for mono printing and around 10 pages per minute for multiple colour printing. Photographic printing at the highest available setting is ten minutes per page. Ideally, the Epson Stylus DX3850 is made for home use or home office use and not for professional work.

The Epson DX3850 is an excellent budget printer, and it comes complete with a functioning and feature rich scanner and colour copier. You will be hard pressed to find a printer of this kind of quality for less money.

Choosing Epson Inkjet Cartridges


There are essentially two choices in terms of inkjet printer cartridge for the DX3850. You can either opt for the original Epson ink cartridges or Epson compatible ink cartridges. The decision will usually come down to a question of budget versus desired quality.

While the Epson ink cartridges are not the cheapest they are excellent quality and ensure that your warranty is still valid. On the other hand, the Epson compatible ink cartridges, are of an excellent standard and much more affordable but may invalidate your warranty. Photographic printing may be of slightly lower quality.
